Once again, the standard “builder’s
bathroom” from the mid-1990’s was the subject of a
demolition and re-do. This time, however, instead of gutting
the space and starting from scratch we focused mostly on
changing out the surfaces to update it. The home owner knew
that she had stiff competition from a new housing
development across the street as she was considering selling
her home. So we were tasked with making the bathroom feel
more contemporary without investing a large chunk of money
that would not be recovered at the time of the sale. She was
a smart cookie, because when we look at statistics of the
costs recouped in the sale of a home, a moderately priced
bathroom remodel would bring her a better return on
investment than a high-priced remodel. Seems
counterintuitive but, our guess is that when folks buy a
house with a very expensive bathroom they feel obligated to
keep it that way rather than feel guilt-free about
remodeling it. And because many times the higher priced
remodel jobs have trendier/more stylized materials, people
are less excited out paying top dollar for it. Who knows? At
any rate, we thought this bathroom remodel turned out
beautifully.
