Mary’s Living Room This client had worked with us several years prior when she and her husband remodeled their Eastmoreland kitchen. They called us back to tackle their front living room which was a large challenge indeed. This house was smaller and older, built in the time before the invention of the “family room” and separate “formal living room” (that nobody uses). This space had to function as the only area in which to entertain guests. The problem was that upon walking in the front door, the seating area and fireplace were a mere six feet in front of us. The room extended lengthwise to the left and the right, but there were main traffic paths cutting through them in both directions. So basically it felt like trying to have a quiet conversation with a freeway between our clients and their guests. Not very useful. So we worked out several options, the one pictured below being the one that meet the most needs on our clients’ list (albeit not all of them - unless we expanded the house out eight more feet towards the curb). So we provided seating for a larger number of people in a smaller space, created plans to re-face the fireplace and add a more appropriate mantel and balanced out the high energy of the space with a soothing color palette with paint, fabrics, and area rugs. It will be a delightful space when it is finished.
