The art of feng shui is used as a way to explain and evaluate the overall “energetic feel” of a space. As an ancient Chinese art, it requires the use of different tools to analyze how a space flows. The use of form, color, and shape are pillars of the feng shui process and can play a very important role in the successful design of any interior or exterior. It can change a chaotic environment into a serene one, an unproductive office into an efficient one, and a sick environment into a healthy one. While feng shui does share concepts with current day interior design, it also covers many abstract concepts not addressed in design education. At Hearthstone Interior Design, LLC we use these tools of the trade in all the work we do. As the understanding and education about feng shui is taking root in our country, more people are tuning into the importance of how our environments reflect us and how we can use intention to change our internal and external worlds. With the phenomenon of the book and movie “The Secret”, the collective understanding that the law of

attraction works to either support or ruin our life’s work is becoming a less mystical concept. Little does the public understand that these principles have been used in feng shui for over 4,000 years!

At Hearthstone Interior Design, LLC we have provided feng shui consultations for architects, businesses, non-profits, and home owners, but also use it in our everyday design decisions. It’s no wonder that we receive thank you notes from clients about how they actually “choose” to spend time in that formal living room which had otherwise been reserved only for when company came to visit!

As a way to de-mystify the practice of feng shui our owner, Kirstin, also taught at Portland Community College in their Community Education Department for several years. She has spoken at many other venues such as the Portland Art Institute’s Interior Design School, the City of Portland, at the Multnomah County Library System Training Day, and in the Hollywood Library’s “Brown Bag Lunch Series”.

It has been said that we only criticize what we don’t understand. This is our way of reaching out to the public to help them make better environmental design decisions and lead healthy and productive lives.
